What Gets Checked During a NY Safety Inspection?

Passenger cars and light trucks require safety inspection technicians to check the following:

• Suspension Components

An Emissions Inspection is also required for Vehicles in New York State.

Emissions Test

Test includes the following:

• Catalytic converter (CAT)
• Exhaust gas recirculation valve (EGR)
• Positive crankcase ventilation system (PCV)
• Air injection system (AIS)
• Evaporative emissions control (EVAP)
• Fuel inlet restrictor (FIR)
• Thermostatic air cleaner (TAC)

Things to Keep in Mind

When you buy a vehicle from a private seller, it is important remember that you have 10 days from the date of vehicle registration to get your vehicle inspected. A previous inspection from the last owner will not be considered a valid inspection.

Out-of-state inspections are valid if you move to New York from another state for one year after the registration date, or until it expires.

If you will be out of the state for the date of your inspection, you can apply for an extension. Simply mail your name and out of state mailing address, the year and made of the vehicle, plate number, and inspection sticker number and expiration date to apply for an extension to the following address:

• Bureau of Consumer and Facility Services
• Inspection Extension
• P.O. Box 2700-ESP
• Albany, NY 12220-0700

After you apply, allow 14 days for the request to be processed through the DMV. Check out the New York DMV website for more information.
